เรื่องย่อ
"สองสามีภรรยา วิทย์และแดงเดินทางกลับกรุงเทพฯ เป็นครั้งแรกในรอบเจ็ดปี เพื่อร่วมงานศพของญาติคนหนึ่ง ทั้งสองเช็คอินโรงแรมแห่งหนึ่ง วิทย์ลงเดินไปซื้อบุหรี่ที่ล็อบบี้ แดงภรรยาของเขาเปิดกระเป๋าจัดเสื้อผ้า เธอเจอกระดาษชิ้นเล็ก ๆ ในนั้นมีเบอร์มือถือของสาวชื่อ น้อย แดงรู้สึกแปลกใจเพราะชีวิตคู่เจ็ดปีของคนทั้งสอง วิทย์ไม่เคยนอกใจ
ที่ล็อบบี้ วิทย์ได้เจอกับพลอย เด็กสาวที่กำลังรอแม่จากสต็อกโฮลม์ วิทย์เชิญเธอไปพักผ่อนที่ห้องของเขากับแดง เขาพยายามอธิบายเหตุผลให้ภรรยาของเขาฟัง แดงพยายามแสดงความมีน้ำใจให้กับพลอย แต่วิทย์เริ่มตระหนักว่าเขาตัดสินใจผิด เพราะนั่นคือจุดเริ่มต้นของความรักและความหึงหวง
หนังเริ่มจากความระแวง เพราะการปรากฏตัวของเด็กสาวเพียงคนเดียว ทั้งคู่เริ่มตระหนักว่าพวกเขาเริ่มห่างเหินกันมากแค่ไหนในรอบเจ็ดปี ก่อนที่จะถึงจุดแตกหัก คนทั้งสองต้องเผชิญหน้ากับทางเลือกที่ว่า จะแยกไปตามทางของตน หรือหันกลับมาสู่อ้อมกอดของกันและกันเพื่อเริ่มต้นใหม่"
เป็นเอก รัตนเรือง เปิดเผยว่า หนังเรื่องนี้จะดำเนินเรื่องเหมือนหนัง 2 เรื่องควบคู่กันไป
“ในหนังเรื่องนี้จะมีสองเหตุการณ์ที่ดูเหมือนไม่ค่อยเกี่ยวกันมันควบคู่กันไป แต่ทั้งสองเหตุการณ์มันเป็นหนังรักทั้งคู่ เหตุการณ์หนึ่งจะเป็นชีวิตคู่ ชีวิตแต่งงานธรรมดา อีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่งมันอีโรติก ซึ่งในส่วนอีโรติกก็ทำได้เท่าที่เราทำได้ หนังไทยมีระบบเซ็นเซอร์หรือแม้กระทั่งนักแสดงเอง คือวัฒนธรรมของไทยมันมีข้อจำกัด”
“หนังไม่มีความรุนแรงเหมือน เรื่องตลก 69 ตัวเนื้อเรื่องมีความอ่อนโยนกว่า ที่ผ่านมาเวลาผมคิดจะทำหนังก็จะมักนำเสนอเรื่องราวในประเด็นเดิมๆ ประมาณว่าเรื่องราวเรียกร้องความสุข ไม่รู้ว่าเรียกร้องมากไปหรือเปล่า แต่กับหนังเรื่องนี้ประเด็นเรื่องความรักจะแตกต่างจากสิ่งที่ผ่านๆ มา”

พลอยเป็นหนังเล็กๆ เรื่องหนึ่งที่ต้อม (เป็นเอก รัตนเรือง) พยายามทำขึ้นมาด้วยทุนที่จำกัด ซึ่งหลังจากทำงานโปรดักชั่นใหญ่มาแล้วก็หันมาทำงานที่เป็นอิสระมากขึ้น เอาเนื้อเรื่องเป็นหลัก
ในเรื่องนี้ ต้อมกลับมาเขียนบทเอง สิ่งที่เป็นตัวเขาจึงออกมาชัดเจน บทหนังเรื่องนี้ทำให้เรานึกถึง เรื่องตลก 69 เหมือนกับว่าผู้กำกับคนเดิม ทีมงานเดิม มีหนังในขนาดเท่าเดิมมาทำด้วยกัน ซึ่งในการทำงานเรารู้จักต้อมดีพออยู่แล้ว จึงไม่ต้องห่วงว่าจะทำงานอย่างไร มันเหมือนมาสนุกกันมากกว่า
โครงสร้างของเรื่องทำให้งานโปรดักชั่นดีไซน์ออกมาคล้ายกับเรื่องตลก 69 ในเรื่องตลก 69 ครึ่งเรื่องเกิดในห้องอพาร์ตเมนต์ของตุ้ม ส่วนเรื่องพลอย ตัวละครเพิ่งกลับมาจากต่างประเทศ พักในโรงแรมห้อง 603และครึ่งเรื่องของหนังเกิดขึ้นในนั้น
งานในส่วนของเราจึงต้องคุยกับต้อมเรื่องห้องนี้เป็นหลัก
โจทย์ของเราคือ ห้อง 603 ซึ่งต้องเป็นห้องของแดงกับวิทย์ และต้องปรับเป็นอีกห้องที่บาร์เทนเดอร์กับแม่บ้านเข้ามีมีเซ็กซ์กัน ซึ่งเราคาดว่าการจะไปถ่ายสถานที่จริงคงมีปัญหาทั้งในเรื่องการขออนุญาต และเรื่องความสะดวกในการถ่ายทำ โจทย์แบบนี้เราควรถ่ายใน Set up ของเราเอง
เมื่อสิบปีที่แล้วเราเคยทำห้องเบอร์ 6 ของตุ้มในสตูดิโอ แต่หนังเรื่องนี้เราคิดว่าน่าจะทำข้างนอกได้แล้ว ซึ่งตอนแรกก็มีความกังวลเรื่องฝนเพราะเราจะต้องถ่ายทำในฤดูฝน แต่เราเชื่อมั่นว่าเราสามารถป้องกันได้โดยมีผ้าใบกันน้ำเป็นหลังคาคลุมฉาก
อีกเหตุผลคือ ห้องของโรงแรมหน้าต่างจะมากกว่าอพาร์ตเมนต์ ในเรื่องตลก 69 ห้องมีลักษณะเป็นซองยาวๆ มีหน้าต่างด้านเดียวซึ่งเราทำในสตูดิโอได้ ในตอนนั้นเราสร้างฉากเป็นอพาร์ตเมนต์ฝั่งตรงข้ามขึ้นมารับเมื่อมีการเปิดหน้าต่างแล้วมองเห็น แต่ถ้าห้องของโรงแรมซึ่งมีหน้าต่างกว้างกว่า ถ้าเราสร้างขึ้นในสถานที่จริง เห็นสภาพแวดล้อมที่สมจริง ภาพที่ได้ย่อมดีกว่าในสตูดิโอแน่นอน ส่วนการควบคุมแสงเราก็สามารถทำได้โดยการใช้ม่านทึบและม่านโปร่งเหมือนในโรงแรมจริงๆ
เป้าหมายคือ เราต้องการทำห้องนี้ให้ถ่ายได้ทุกด้านเหมือนห้องในโรงแรมจริงๆ มีมุมกล้องที่อิสระพอที่จะถ่ายได้โดยไม่น่าเบื่อหน่าย และเราจะสร้างมันขึ้นมาบนดาดฟ้า
จากนั้น โจทย์ของฝ่ายสถานที่ก็คือ หาดาดฟ้าของตึกที่สูงประมาณ 6 ชั้น เพราะว่าเป็นความสูงจริงที่เมื่อเรายิงทะลุออกไปก็จะได้บรรยากาศภายนอกที่สมจริง ซึ่งต้อมเห็นด้วย
งานที่เหลือส่วนอื่นเป็นงานตกแต่งในสถานที่จริง เช่น ลอบบี้ของโรงแรมถ่ายทำในร้านอาหาร ส่วนซักรีดถ่ายทำที่เซอร์วิสอพาร์ตเมนต์ของอพาร์ตเมนต์แห่งหนึ่ง และทั้งหมดก็ถูกนำมารวมกันเป็นโรงแรมที่ชื่อ FINN HOTEL

About the film
Ploy is the sixth feature film of Pen-Ek Rattanarueang.
Synopsis
“A couple, Wit and Daeng travel back to Bangkok. It is the first time in the seven years round. They are to participate in a cousin’s funeral. They both check in to a hotel. Wit goes down to buy cigarettes at the hotel’s lobby. While Daeng, his wife, is arranging their suitcases, she finds a little piece of paper written a cell phone number of a girl named Noy. It surprises Daeng because all their seven years of marriage life, Wit has never cheated on her.”
At the lobby, Wit meets Ploy, a girl who is expecting her mother from Stockholm. Wit invites her to take some rest at his room. He has tried to explain the situation to his wife. Yet, Daeng tries to be sympathetic to Ploy but Wit is starting to realize that he has made a wrong decision as this is the beginning of love and jealousy.
The film starts with apprehensiveness because of a girl’s presence. They are starting to realize how much they have kept apart in the seven years round. At the breaking point, They will be facing 2 options, to separate or to resume to the hug of each other for the new start-up.”
Pen-Ek discloses that this film is carrying out like there are 2 films running along.
“In this film, there are 2 situations that seem likely unrelated, but they are both about love. One situation is an ordinary marriage life. Another one is erotic, in this particular part we can do as much as we can, no matter censoring or the characters themselves because of the limitation of Thai culture.”
“This film has no violence like 6ixtynin9. It is milder. When I am thinking of doing a film, I will always present the same point which is about calling for happiness. I am not sure whether or not it is too much demanding. But the point of love in this film is different from what it has been”
Design Concept

Ploy is a little film that Tom (Pen-Ek Rattanarueang) has tried to create it with the limited budget. After having worked on the big production, he turns to work more freely, emphasizing on a scenario.
In this film, Tom himself writes the movie script so what he is like appears in the film obviously. This film script reminds us of 6ixtynin9, same director, same team, same size of movie that we have done together. To work with Tom again, we do not have to worry how we will be working because we know Tom well. It is like we gather to enjoy it.
The film structure is similar to 6ixtynin9 in terms of Production Design. In 6ixtynin9, half of the movie takes place in Toom’s apartment. But in Ploy, the characters have just come back from abroad, stay in a hotel, room 609, so half of the movie takes place in there.
Accordingly, our main discussion with Tom is about this particular room.
Our problem is the room 609 where must be arranged to be Daeng’s and Wit’s room as well as the room where a bartender and a maid have sex. We anticipate that there will be trouble asking permission and the convenience in shooting. To solve this kind of problem, we have to shoot the film in our own Set-up.
Ten years ago, we used to make up a number 6 of Toom’s room in studio. But in creating this film, it is time to do it outdoor. In the first place, we are worried about the rain because we must shoot this movie in rainy season but, anyhow, we believe that we can have it sheltered by arranging a canvas to cover the set.
Another reason is that hotel has more windows than apartment. In the period of time that we shot 6ixtynin9, room is a square shape and there is only one window so we can do it in studio. We also set up an apartment located in the opposite side to support the sight when opening the window. But if the hotel’s room where window is wider, if we can shoot it in the real location and the realistic surrounding is seen, we will certainly get the better picture than the one done in the studio. In regard to controlling lights, we can set up the opaque and transparent curtain just like the one in the real hotel.
The target is to set up this room to be able to be shot in every angle like in the real hotel. The camera angle must be free much enough to shoot without boredom. We then set it up on the deck.
Then, the problem of the location team is to find a 6 storey building since it is actual height and good camera angle. When we shoot outside, we will get the realistic atmosphere. Tom agrees with this as well.
The rest job is decoration in the real location, for example, the hotel’s lobby that is shot in a restaurant, the laundry that is shot in a serviced apartment. The said all are combined to be the hotel named Finn Hotel.
